Would be nice to be able to change cms_Data folder name maybe in web.config or system admin section.

It is impossible to change. Because there have many hard code used in the file virtual path.

Thanks for that, i understand it would break some installations, but if it is a complete new install for and the web.config has a setting, then would the system nowt just pick it up and use that path just for that application, like an option?

For the fresh version, yes, it is possible to change the name when the site first running. I will try to add a new setting in the web.config to change it in the future.
